Kate & Rose

Indie Biz ownerSuzanne Anderson

Hey, I'm Suzanne owner and creator of all things Kate and Rose from Melbourne Australia. I'm a lover of vintage teacups and the concept for Kate & Rose was born from up cycling vintage china into teacup candles and vintage cake stands. Mini cake or trinket stands were also perfect for displaying jewellery on. When I went to markets, I had people wanting to buy my personal jewellery, so I started making little polymer clay donut earrings and cupcake studs, and sweet miniature china teacup pendants. Before long there was more demand for the jewellery, than the up cycled items. Over time what started as a tea party theme, has extended to all sorts of food options, and Retro and Kawaii designs. Some are planned around certain stockists like a local vintage shop that has a 1950s vibe, so I created statement acrylic earrings, prawns, jellyfish, lobsters.
Sometimes you have to expand from what you wanted to make to actually find the niche of what your customers want to buy. I work from home and I should say from my home studio, and whilst there is a studio, I must confess I tend to sprawl around the house. I have two packing assistants (rescue cats Skittles & Comets). They actually don't really assist. They just tend to sit on the boxes that the orders come in. But hey they make for the cutest of shots and they keep me company. During lockdown last year, they were known as they therapy cats. My husband helps too, at the busy time of year, for me that's mainly Oct -Dec in the lead up to Christmas! From putting boxes together to all manner of tasks. Yay to him. I love my biz so much as it enabled me to set up work that I could balance around my family, I have 2 teen girls. I'm really stoked that being an independent has allowed me work life balance.
I still love a good High Tea and I reckon "Where there is Tea there is Hope", or at least a donut!!
