Studio Squish

Indie Biz ownerRachel

I'm Rachel and I'm the founder, designer, maker and everything in between at Studio Squish.

🍶 I learnt about ceramics when I was studying design at Staffs uni. I love it - it’s my heart, my happy, my calm. On the back of a couple of maternity leaves and the pandemic, I finally took the leap and set up Studio Squish last year.

I make ceramic all sorts. At Christmas and Easter I go wild for decorations and in between there are vases, coasters, rings and wherever my sketches take me along the way. My style is minimal and calm, normally white with a splash of colour. Oh and there are lots of circles too, you'll notice I have a thing for them!

I use slipcasting techniques - making plaster moulds, casting from them and then firing twice (with lots of sanding in between) - so there's a lot of hearty heart (that's what my 3 year old calls love) that goes into each and every piece.

A good friend of mine introduced me to parian porcelain recently and I can't get enough of it now! I make all of my work from it, it's so smooth and tactile and has the most beautiful, delicate translucent finish.

It’s funny reading the definitions of Squish, it has all sorts of meanings. For me it's a few things...
🎓 A squash or a pinch. When I was studying, I used to squash and pinch my clay work just before it dried (in a designer way, not a breaky way!) That was my thing and it still sometimes creeps into my designs.
🦉 A cosy, squeezy space. Like my studio! It's in our back room, which we all use all day long, so I normally make in the evenings while the girls sleep. The dream is to build a studio in the garden, take Squish out there and not spend so much time cleaning plaster and clay up at 1am.
🤗 A really big hug. The answer to pretty much everything.

So that's me and Squish. Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or fancy a natter about designs or colours then drop me a message.

Stay Squishy.
